The E-axes Forum on Climate Change, Macroeconomics, and Finance

Markus Leippold

“AI for Climate Policy: Transforming Analysis in Central Banks and Academia”

Event description

Young Scholars' Webinar on Climate Finance and Economics

Markus Leippold and Vatsala Shreeti will explore the transformative potential of Large Language Models (LLMs) in the analysis of climate change mitigation policies within both central banks and academic institutions. Their discussion will encompass an overview of current methodologies, highlighting how LLMs are being integrated into policy analysis and decision-making processes. They will examine specific domains where these advanced AI tools offer substantial advantages—such as synthesizing complex datasets, modeling policy impacts, and facilitating interdisciplinary research. Additionally, the panelists will critically assess the limitations and challenges associated with deploying LLMs in this context, identifying gaps in existing practices and outlining promising directions for future research and development.

Markus Leippold

Markus Leippold is Professor of Financial Engineering at the University of Zurich. Throughout his career he has been involved in numerous projects with the Swiss banking industry and with tech companies such as Google, and he currently sits on the benchmark oversight committee of STOXX/Qontigo, and the academic advisory board of Fedafin. Professor Leippold’s recent focus is on climate finance, sustainability, and artificial intelligence, particularly natural language processing. Currently, he is studying how corporations communicate their efforts to combat the adverse effects of climate change.

Previously, Professor Leippold was a member of the faculty at Imperial College London. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics and Finance from the University of St. Gallen.

Gaurav Sahu

Postdoctoral Fellow

Gaurav Sahu is a Postdoctoral Fellow at Mila – Quebec AI Institute, where he develops specialized large language models for scientific workflows, including automated literature discovery and streamlining the peer-review process. He holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Waterloo, where he developed efficient strategies to adapt generalist LLMs for diverse natural language processing tasks such as data augmentation, automated data analysis, and computational modeling of aesthetic preferences.

His research sits at the intersection of generative AI and natural language processing, with a particular emphasis on leveraging artificial intelligence to advance scientific discovery and research workflows.
